RITZ AMPHITHEATRE
THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA
What began as an abandoned backyard and parking area for local businesses is now a beautiful landmark in Thomasville, Georgia. Jerry Pionessa, Principal at JMJ, consulted with the City of Thomasville for a multiyear development, and handled everything from engagement and planning to design, construction, and ultimately the opening event in the spring of 2017.
Pionessa began at the conceptual phase of development, organizing regular design reviews and stakeholder listening sessions that led to refining the architecture, pedestrian experience and overall aesthetics.
Specific challenges to the area included significant oak tree preservation, a terraced amphitheater and stage, trailhead and bike facilities, space for public art displays, public restrooms and more. Thanks to Pionessa, the success of the Amphitheater has made it a destination for residents of Thomasville and beyond.
THE PRESERVE AT PANTHER CREEK
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA
Sprawling over 400 acres on Jacksonville’s west side, JMJ converted a former golf course to 769 single-family lots. This project featured large natural and created wetland areas under a conservation easement and a 25-acre lake. This project’s particular challenges included existing conservation easements and permits for the golf course. JMJ developed improvements that include two lift stations, flood plain and wetland mitigation, walking trails, 10 stormwater management ponds, 5.7 miles of new streets, utility and drainage infrastructure, and over 11 acres of active recreation areas. The design evolved a forgotten golf course into a desirable place to live, relax and raise a family
THOMASVILLE COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT
THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA
JMJ provided civil engineering and design for a 4-story hotel in the heart of historic downtown Thomasville. This high-profile, design-build project was guided by a citizen appointed board’s input, an the aesthetics and building placement were a priority. One challenge was the hotel’s placement — parking and the pool were purposely placed on the sides and rear of the bilding, allowing for the hotel’s entrance to have a promient position at a key intersection. In addition to design, the JMJ team was responsible for erosion control, traffic and pedestrian circulation, parking, drainage and utilities. This hotel will be iconic for decades to come and JMJ was excited to bring this community need to life.

JMJ used their experience in site design, pedestrian circulation, construction materials, drainage, utilities, and environmental resources permitting to deliver improvements for the main house, headquarters, boat house & dock, stables & kennels, ponds, irrigation wells, roadways and utility corridors. Today, it is a gorgeous property, representing all of the best hunting and fishing that South Georgia has to offer.
THE CENTER FOR HEALTH & SPORTS MEDICINE
ST. JOHNS, FLORIDA
JMJ designed a state-of-the art 5,400 square foot medical office building with a tri-fold focus of primary care, sports medicine and wellness. The team was responsible for site planning, utility and drainage engineering, landscape architecture, land use permitting, and complying with Planned Unit Development criteria. They also had to keep growth opportunities in mind, like future expansion and interconnection. Today it is a destination for Jacksonville, Mandarin, St. Johns and Orange Park residents, and the team enjoyed working on a wellness initiative in their community.
